The sound of a Japanese temple bell is traditionally understood as unfolding through three successive stages: atari (strike), oshi (sustained pressure), and okuri (resonant decay). This temporal structure resonates with the Western musical notions of attack, echo, and resonance. The present work draws inspiration from such processes of sonic transformation through time.
In the preceding work Impromptu, the progression of natural energy found in the “Storm” movement of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony served as a point of reference. There, chains of sonic objects—slap tonguing, swirling figures, tremolos, and key noises—were employed to articulate evolving states of energy and motion. Composite takes Impromptu as its point of departure and reconfigures its materials as a mixed work for instrument and electronics.
The title refers to the relationship between Kandinsky’s Improvisations and Compositions. Beginning with materials that emerge as spontaneous impulses and gestures, the work seeks to organize them according to an inner necessity and integrate them into a larger formal structure. Instrument and electronics interact in ways that extend the relationships of attack, echo, and resonance, generating energetic trajectories reminiscent of natural phenomena. In this sense, Composite can be understood as an attempt to develop the sonic and physical impulses embedded in Impromptu into a new compositional dimension.
