◯ Play of Lines, Shapes, and Resonances — Creation 2026
◯ This workshop and lecture concert explores the relationship between composition and “graphic scores” (musical scores represented through lines, shapes, and diagrams), taking as its point of departure the ideas of one of Japan’s leading composers, Joji Yuasa.
Focusing on works by Joji Yuasa, Tomokage Imai — a Nagoya-based composer and intellectual successor to Yuasa’s thought — and Keita Matsumiya, the event will examine how visual ideas such as shapes, lines, and movement can be transformed into music.
Through performances by Nagoya-based string performer Maya Egashira and talks by the composers themselves, audiences will be introduced to the creative processes behind these works.
In the first half, participants in the workshop will experience how shapes and lines they draw themselves can be transformed into sound through programming processes, allowing them to physically and intuitively explore the relationship between “drawing” and “sounding.”
The second half will take the form of a lecture concert featuring performances and commentary on works based on graphic scores, presenting the creative possibilities of contemporary music that emerge from the interaction between visuality and sound.
