Fanfare on a Theme of Taki 2023/10/28

for 3 trumpets, 3 horns, 4 trombones, 4 percussionists

This fanfare, composed on a theme from Taki Rentarō’s Kōjō no Tsuki (Moon over the Ruined Castle), reconstructs from the chords obtained by vertically superimposing the melody at the opening of the original piece a monophonic melodic line. Each time this line reappears in different instrumental groups, it develops in multiple layers—from heterophonic interplay to polyphonic interplay—so that the original melody gradually emerges from within the texture. Based on a work inspired by Taki’s own thoughts on Okajō Castle and its history, I attempted to create bell-like sonorities resonating across the vast land of Ōita, with its many hills and plateaus.
